"Die Rit / The Drive" is a South African black comedy that cuts very close to the bone. Two friends go on a long-planned road trip and catch up as they make their way to Hazyview, South Africa.Through the loaded dialogue, the film explores the emotional disconnection that many South Africans experience in relation to violent crime and how we have largely resigned ourselves to the status quo. This 12-minute short film loaded with irony, irreverence and downright bleak humour packs a surprising emotional punch. The film shows South Africans in no uncertain terms how warped their principles have become: the coldness with which they accept news of brutality and violence with an almost inhumane blasé attitude. It reveals them as a people unaffected, except by the very closest encounters of crime.
